Hermes vs OpenClaw: Which AI Helper Should You Run?

You do not make a permanent install-time choice. Both helpers are provisioned automatically, and both can search the files, notes, customer history, templates, and rules in your Business Brain. Choose the runtime whose interface and operating model fit the task.

Hermes vs OpenClaw: The Comparison at a Glance
Both runtimes share more than they divide. Here’s where they actually differ.

What Hermes Agent Does Differently
Hermes is built by Nous Research, the lab behind the Hermes and Nomos model families. The distinguishing feature is the closed learning loop: the agent autonomously creates skill files after completing complex tasks, improves those skills during subsequent use, uses FTS5 full-text search with LLM summarization for cross-session recall, and builds a user model through what the documentation calls Honcho dialectic modeling. In plain terms, the longer you run Hermes, the more it refines its own procedures based on how your work actually goes.
This design may matter for repetitive work. A recurring report or research process can become a reusable skill instead of remaining a one-off conversation. Test that behavior with your own workflow before treating it as a reason to standardize on Hermes.
Hermes supports local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, and Modal execution backends. Some can hibernate an environment while it is idle. BrainRoad manages its hosted runtime, so BrainRoad customers do not configure those backends directly.
On channel breadth, Hermes reaches 20+ platforms from one gateway process. The Chinese platforms (DingTalk, Feishu, WeCom, Weixin, QQ Bot, Yuanbao) are worth noting if you work with contacts who use those apps. Hermes also supports voice mode in the CLI, Telegram, Discord, and Discord voice channels - real-time voice interaction, not just text.
The OpenClaw-Specific Browser View on BrainRoad
BrainRoad’s Browser page currently belongs to the OpenClaw path. It shows the sandboxed browser attached to that helper. Hermes does not use that dashboard page.
The Business Brain, review Inbox, and Team room are BrainRoad account surfaces. They are not OpenClaw-only, and switching runtimes does not create a second copy of them.
On channel support, OpenClaw reaches 25+ messaging platforms and includes the built-in WebChat, a browser dashboard at http://127.0.0.1:18789/ after the gateway starts, and companion apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. The iOS and Android nodes add voice wake words, Canvas, camera, and screen capture. One honest caveat: the iMessage channel appears in OpenClaw’s list but requires a bridge running on a local Mac. BrainRoad’s hosted workspaces are Linux, so iMessage is not available there even though the channel option exists.
OpenClaw’s security model is explicitly scoped to a single-user trust boundary. The documentation is direct: running one shared gateway for mutually untrusted or adversarial users is not supported. Adversarial-user isolation requires separate gateways on separate OS users or hosts. Keep one trust boundary per gateway, even when the people involved know each other. What the Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw Choice Does Not Change
The Business Brain is the same for both. Files, notes, customer history, templates, follow-up rules, and service details you’ve added to your Brain are available to whichever runtime is active. You’re not building two separate knowledge bases.
Actions proposed through BrainRoad’s managed Triage path enter the same review Inbox, whichever runtime drafted them. Native runtime channels are different. They keep the runtime and channel provider’s own authority rules and do not automatically inherit BrainRoad review.
Model and key setup also works the same. Every new account gets a BrainRoad-managed OpenRouter trial key already configured, so either helper works before you add any key of your own. Connecting a messaging channel to either runtime works the same way too: you bring your own bot token or account credentials with that provider, configure it inside the runtime’s native interface (not in the BrainRoad dashboard), and BrainRoad does not connect any channel automatically.
Running Hermes and OpenClaw Side by Side
You can run both. Both runtimes auto-start when your account is provisioned, and you switch between them with the runtime switcher in the dashboard sidebar. You’re not choosing at install - you’re choosing which one to open.
Run the same bounded task in each interface and compare the result, controls, and friction. Keep both if they serve different jobs, or stop the runtime you do not use. A live channel connection affects whether a helper should remain running, so check channel state before stopping it.
Moving from OpenClaw to Hermes Agent
If you’ve been using OpenClaw and want to try Hermes without losing your setup, Hermes ships a migration command: hermes claw migrate.
The setup wizard also detects an existing ~/.openclaw directory during first-time Hermes setup and offers to migrate before configuration begins. Here’s what transfers:

- Memories - MEMORY.md and USER.md entries
- Skills - user-created skills, imported to ~/.hermes/skills/openclaw-imports/
- Command allowlist - approval patterns
- Messaging settings - platform configs, allowed users, working directory
- API keys - allowlisted secrets (Telegram, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, ElevenLabs)
- TTS assets - workspace audio files
Choosing between AI voice assistants involves weighing factors like response accuracy, integration flexibility, and how well each tool fits an existing workflow.
Treat migration as a copy operation, not a reason to destroy the original setup. Keep the OpenClaw configuration until you have verified the imported Hermes identity, memories, skills, credentials, and channels.
How to Know You Picked the Right Runtime
A few signals that you’re in the right place:
- You need BrainRoad’s Browser page. Use OpenClaw for that dashboard view.
- You want the runtime to turn repeated work into improving skills. Test Hermes’s documented learning loop with a real recurring task.
- You need a specific channel. Check the current official channel list and deployment requirements for that runtime before choosing.
- You need managed review. Use BrainRoad’s Triage proposal path. Do not assume a native Telegram, Slack, or WhatsApp connection is approval-gated.

Do I have to choose between Hermes and OpenClaw, or can I use both?
You can use both. They start automatically when the account is provisioned, and the dashboard runtime switcher changes which helper you are viewing. You may also stop one without deleting the other.
Will Hermes or OpenClaw send something externally without me checking it?
External actions routed through BrainRoad’s managed action layer go through the review Inbox before they send - that’s the same for both runtimes. Native runtime channels (like a Telegram bot you’ve connected directly inside the runtime’s own interface) run under each runtime’s own security model, not BrainRoad’s review step.
